Becoming a mother is often described as the happiest moment in a woman’s life. But for many women, including me, it also brings unexpected emotional challenges. One of the most difficult experiences I faced was postpartum depression.
After my baby was born, my life completely changed. Everyone around me was happy, but inside, I was struggling. I felt tired, emotionally drained, and sometimes even lost. At that time, I didn’t understand what was happening to me. Later, I realized it was postpartum depression, something many new moms silently go through.
In this blog, I want to share my real experience, symptoms, and how I slowly started my postpartum depression recovery journey.
What is Postpartum Depression?
Postpartum depression is a serious mental health condition that affects women after childbirth. It is more than just mood swings. Many people think it is normal to feel sad after delivery, but if the sadness stays for weeks or months, it could be postpartum depression.
It can affect:
- Your emotions
- Your energy levels
- Your daily routine
- Your connection with your baby
Postpartum Depression Symptoms
In my case, I didn’t realize the symptoms at first. But looking back, I experienced many common postpartum depression symptoms:
- Constant sadness without reason
- Feeling overwhelmed all the time
- Anger and irritation
- No time or interest in self-care
- Feeling alone even with family around
- Lack of sleep or too much sleep
- Negative thoughts
Sometimes, I even felt like I was not a good mother. That feeling was the hardest part. If you are feeling this way, please understand, You are not alone. Many moms go through this.
My Real Experience as a New Mom
After my baby was born, my routine completely changed. My full time went into baby care ,feeding, cleaning, and managing the house.
I also started thinking:
- Only mothers are responsible for the baby
- Fathers don’t understand
- I have no personal time
These thoughts created anger inside me. Slowly, I started feeling emotionally weak. I had no time for myself, no rest, and no one really understood what I was going through.
This is how my postpartum depression started.
Why Does Postpartum Depression Happen?
There are many reasons behind it:
- Hormonal changes after delivery
- Lack of sleep
- Physical weakness
- Emotional pressure
- No support system
- Sudden life changes
In India, many women don’t talk about mental health. That makes the situation worse.
How I Started My Postpartum Depression Recovery
Recovery was not easy, but I slowly took small steps. Here’s what helped me:
1. Talking About My Feelings
I started sharing my feelings with my husband. Even small conversations helped reduce my stress.
2. Taking Time for Myself
Even 10–15 minutes for myself made a difference. I started doing small things I liked.
3. Accepting Help
Earlier, I thought I had to do everything alone. But I realized it’s okay to ask for help
4. Self-Care
Simple things like rest, proper food, and a short walk helped improve my mood.
5. Positive Thinking
I started reminding myself:
I am doing my best as a mother.
Important Message for New Moms
